Pioneers in Crime Detection: A Bibliography of American Books and Pamphlets About Criminalistics and Criminal Investigation, 1892 to 1959

Compiled by Jim Fisher

The books and pamphlets included in this bibliography are scholarly works, manuals, handbooks, and texts primarily intended to inform the practitioner or student. Books written for the layman that are informative but mainly for the entertainment of the reader are excluded. So are government guides.

The term "criminalistics" includes the fields of questioned documents, fingerprints, firearms identification, trace evidence analysis, and other forms of scientific or technological crime detection such as instrumental lie detection. Books about toxicology and forensic medicine are excluded, as are American editions of books by foreign authors.

Each work is numbered and listed according to the year it was initially published. This chronological listing is followed by a subject and author index.
